Course Description

This introductory course provides participants with the foundational skills needed to operate industrial sewing machines and complete a variety of basic sewing projects. Through hands-on instruction and guided practice, learners will gain the confidence and competence to work in an industrial sewing environment, all while adhering to safety protocols and ensuring professional-quality results. As an added benefit, participants will gain free access to our Career Building online eLearning training program, which includes an additional 16 hours of high-quality learning content. This program offers further development in areas such as resume writing, interview skills, and essential workplace communication to support your career advancement.

Course Outline

Session 1: Introduction to Industrial Sewing (Oct 7)

In this session, participants will be introduced to the world of industrial sewing and the types of machines commonly used in the field. They will learn important safety protocols for handling machines and navigating the sewing workspace. Key topics include identifying the components of the sewing machine, threading, and performing basic maintenance. Participants will also engage in simple stitching exercises, which will help them gain control over machine speed and fabric feeding. As beginners, they will be guided through these exercises with a focus on safety, minimizing risks such as accidentally pricking fingers.

Session 2: Mastering Basic Seams and Zippers (Oct 8)

During the second session, participants will build on their initial skills by mastering fundamental seam types such as straight seams, reinforced seams, and topstitching. They will also learn how to install zippers accurately and cleanly. Another focus will be on finishing raw edges to give projects a professional appearance. By the end of the session, participants will put their new skills into practice by creating a simple but functional pencil case. This project will reinforce the techniques learned and help participants build confidence in their sewing abilities.

Session 3: Precision in Pattern Cutting and Construction (Oct 10)

In this session, participants will dive into the more technical aspects of sewing, such as reading and aligning patterns with fabric grain to ensure precision. They will practice cutting fabric with accuracy and learn the importance of structural seams and reinforcements in construction. Throughout the session, participants will apply these skills to the creation of a tote bag, allowing them to better understand how precision in cutting and assembly contributes to the overall quality and durability of a project.

Session 4: Working with Curves and Closures (Oct 15)

The fourth session will focus on more advanced sewing techniques, including creating smooth, consistent curved seams and installing various closures such as elastics, drawstrings, and fasteners. Participants will also learn how to manage multiple fabric layers when working on structured designs. The practical project for this session is the creation of a water bottle cover, which will give participants hands-on experience in applying these new techniques to a real-world project, further developing their confidence and sewing abilities.

Session 5: Finishing Techniques and Quality Control (Oct 17)

The final session will emphasize the importance of quality control and finishing techniques. Participants will inspect their projects for stitch and seam quality, ensuring that the final products meet professional standards. As a capstone activity, participants will choose one project they completed in a previous session and will be tasked with finishing it within a set time limit, testing their speed and precision under real-world conditions. The session will conclude with the distribution of certificates and any remaining work on projects will be finalized.

Bonus: Career Building and Industry Connections

In addition to the hands-on industrial sewing training, participants will receive 16 hours of self-paced Career Building eLearning content, designed to enhance their job readiness. This bonus content covers essential skills like resume building, interview preparation, and professional communication, giving participants the tools they need to successfully transition into the workforce.

Furthermore, our facility has strong connections with numerous industry employers. These employers regularly visit to inquire about hiring our past students, giving participants a direct pathway to potential employment opportunities upon completion of the course.
