WorkSafeBC Authorized Asbestos Abatement Training

In the workplace, asbestos awareness is a life saving skill to have due to the significant health risks associated with exposure to this hazardous material.

Health risks associated with Asbestos

Prior to 1990, asbestos was widely used in construction materials that insulate buildings and homes. Medical science since has identified that asbestos pose severe health threats when its fibres are released into the air and inhaled or ingested. Asbestos is known to cause lung cancer, asbestosis lung scarring, mesothelioma, and other diseases.

Where Asbestos can be found in Work Environments?

Since 1985 Canadian builders have stopped using asbestos in construction, however, workers are still subject to exposure as asbestos can still be found in older buildings such as ceilings, walls, flooring, roofing shingles and felt, putty, drywall, caulking, sealants, spackling, industrial furnaces, heating systems, and insulation.

How can workers be exposed to Asbestos?

Asbestos fibres can be easily inhaled and/or ingested from building materials from renovation and demolition work of old buildings. Exposure can come from activities like drilling, sawing, scraping, breaking, and disturbing of construction materials used in old buildings.
