Course Description
This in-person course equips participants with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in health and safety regulations, the responsibilities of Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) members, and workplace safety management processes. Participants will engage in interactive learning through real-life scenarios, team activities, and practical applications. By the end, participants will be confident in understanding legislation, conducting inspections, and making effective safety recommendations in the workplace.
Course Outline
Introduction to Legislation
This module introduces participants to key occupational health and safety legislation, exploring relevant acts and regulations. A research quiz is included to help participants engage with critical sections of the OHS regulations.
Duties and Functions of JHSC Members
Participants will explore the core duties and functions of JHSC members through real-life scenarios and practice questions. The module covers selecting JHSC members, reporting responsibilities, and team activities for developing procedural rules.
Refusal of Unsafe Work
This module explains the legal process and rights surrounding the refusal of unsafe work. Participants engage with scenarios and checkpoint questions to ensure they understand the refusal process and its implementation.
Duty to Consult
Focusing on the duty to consult, participants will complete research tasks on WorkSafeBC guidelines, followed by discussions on applying these principles in the workplace.
Effective Communication
This module emphasizes the role of communication in safety management. Participants will complete communication surveys, learn effective communication strategies, and practice through team activities like recording meeting minutes.
Conducting Inspections
Participants will gain hands-on experience in conducting workplace inspections. Using checklists and report templates, they will practice identifying hazards and documenting inspection findings in a collaborative team setting.
Making Safety Recommendations
In the final module, participants will learn how to make effective safety recommendations by working through scenarios, such as addressing paint vapor hazards. The module includes a focus on the hierarchy of controls and practical decision-making to ensure workplace safety improvements.
