Course Description

This WHMIS training course is designed to help employees understand and apply the principles of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) in their workplace. It covers essential information about hazardous material identification, safe handling practices, and emergency procedures. By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to recognize WHMIS labels, understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and ensure a safe working environment around hazardous substances. This course is suitable for employees in any industry where hazardous materials are present. At the end of the course, participants will take a final test to demonstrate their understanding of the content. Upon passing, they will receive a WHMIS certification that is valid for three years.

Course Outline

Introduction to WHMIS

This module provides an overview of WHMIS, including its purpose, legal requirements, and its role in promoting workplace safety. Participants will learn about the history of WHMIS, its components, and the key regulations that govern its implementation in Canada. Understanding these foundational elements sets the stage for more detailed learning about hazardous materials.

WHMIS Hazard Symbols and Labels

In this module, participants will explore the different WHMIS hazard symbols used to indicate various types of risks associated with hazardous materials. The training covers how to interpret these symbols and the information presented on product labels, including signal words and hazard statements. This knowledge is crucial for recognizing potential dangers and ensuring proper safety measures are taken.

Understanding Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

This module delves into the Safety Data Sheets (SDS), which provide detailed information about hazardous substances. Participants will learn how to navigate the SDS sections, including hazard identification, composition, first aid measures, and emergency procedures. Proper use of SDS is essential for safe handling and responding to emergencies involving hazardous materials.

Safe Handling and Storage of Hazardous Materials

The focus of this module is on best practices for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Participants will learn about the types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for different materials and how to implement effective safety measures to prevent accidents. The module also covers proper storage conditions to minimize risks associated with hazardous substances.

Emergency Procedures

This module prepares participants for emergencies involving hazardous materials. It includes guidelines on responding to spills, leaks, and other incidents. Participants will learn the steps to take in different emergency situations, including initial response actions, notification procedures, and follow-up measures to ensure safety and compliance with WHMIS regulations.
