Course Description

This introductory course provides participants with the foundational skills needed to operate industrial sewing machines and complete a variety of basic sewing projects. Through hands-on instruction and guided practice, learners will gain the confidence and competence to work in an industrial sewing environment, all while adhering to safety protocols and ensuring professional-quality results. As an added benefit, participants will gain free access to our Career Building online eLearning training program, which includes an additional 16 hours of high-quality learning content. This program offers further development in areas such as resume writing, interview skills, and essential workplace communication to support your career advancement.

Course Outline

Session 1: Safety and Machine Control

In this session, we will cover essential industrial sewing safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment. Participants will learn about the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and regular machine inspections to prevent accidents. We will focus on developing control and precision while operating single-needle and automatic sewing machines, emphasizing high-quality standards in our work. Additionally, participants will engage in speed control practice using paper exercises, allowing them to enhance their skills in managing machine speed effectively. This foundational training will set the stage for safe and proficient sewing practices throughout the program.

Session 2: Machine Setup and Basics

In this session, we will focus on the setup and maintenance of single-needle and automatic sewing machines, ensuring participants understand the importance of proper machine care for optimal performance. We will cover essential tasks such as bobbin winding, threading, and troubleshooting common issues that may arise during operation. Participants will also learn about different needle types and how to select the appropriate needle for various fabric types, which is crucial for achieving the best results in their sewing projects. Additionally, we will introduce overlock machines, discussing their role in fabric finishing and demonstrating how they can enhance the quality of sewn items. This session aims to provide participants with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to operate and maintain their sewing machines effectively.

Session 3: Basic Sewing Techniques and Seams

In this session, we will introduce participants to various seam types and their specific uses in sewing. Understanding different seams is essential for achieving the desired finish and durability in sewn items. Participants will engage in hands-on practice to master key techniques, including straight seams, French seams, and flat-felled seams. We will emphasize precision work using both single-needle and automatic sewing machines to ensure high-quality results. As a practical application of the skills learned, participants will work on a project to create a sample piece that incorporates the various seams covered in this session. This project will not only reinforce their sewing techniques but also allow them to showcase their newfound skills in seam construction.

Session 4: Pockets and Zippers

In this session, we will explore the techniques for constructing different types of pockets, including patch pockets and cut-in pockets. Participants will learn how to measure, cut, and sew patch pockets effectively, ensuring a neat and functional addition to their projects. We will also cover the process of creating cut-in pockets with clean edges, emphasizing precision and attention to detail. Additionally, we will introduce participants to zipper installation techniques, including how to install a fly zipper and an invisible zipper. These skills are crucial for adding functionality and style to various garments. To reinforce the techniques learned, participants will engage in a hands-on project that involves practicing sewing pockets and zippers on sample fabric. This project will provide practical experience and confidence in working with these essential elements of garment construction.

Session 5: Final Project

In this session, we will recap the skills learned in previous sessions, including seams, pockets, and zippers. Participants will then explore creating three-dimensional objects with fabric through a final project: crafting a custom water bottle cover. They will apply techniques such as seam construction, overlock finishing, and zipper installation, with a focus on precision and finishing touches. To assess their skills, participants will complete a speed-based assessment of the final project, showcasing their sewing abilities and creativity developed throughout the program.

Bonus: Career Building and Industry Connections

In addition to the hands-on industrial sewing training, participants will receive 16 hours of self-paced Career Building eLearning content, designed to enhance their job readiness. This bonus content covers essential skills like resume building, interview preparation, and professional communication, giving participants the tools they need to successfully transition into the workforce.

Furthermore, our facility has strong connections with numerous industry employers. These employers regularly visit to inquire about hiring our past students, giving participants a direct pathway to potential employment opportunities upon completion of the course. This added element ensures that graduates of the program are well-prepared not only in their sewing skills but also in their career development.
